Sheffield Wednesday are set for a cup double-header as they host Morecambe in the first round of the FA Cup on Friday, before travelling to Southampton in the Carabao Cup next Wednesday. The Owls head into the ties in fine form as they remain unbeaten in six matches in all competitions.

Darren Moore’s side sit third in League One - only three points behind second place Ipswich Town. The Owls will have matches against Accrington Stanley and Shrewsbury to force themselves into the top two before club football pauses for the World Cup.

Accy’s unwanted run comes to an end

Accrington Stanley will be full of relief after they brought their run of five successive league defeats to an end, despite only claiming a point against Lincoln City yesterday. Harvey Rodgers netted the equaliser only five minutes from time.

With Accrington now sat three points above the relegation zone, boss John Coleman said: “The lads needed this – they needed to see some rewards for their efforts. “We are not out of the woods yet by a long, long chalk and we still need to score more goals.

“We had a long, four-hour meeting on Sunday and it was time well spent. There was a willingness and eagerness to right a few wrongs tonight. It would have been nice to win, but it was imperative not to lose.”

Sheffield Wednesday will travel to Wham Stadium in League One next week.

Goal of the Month winner revealed

Ipswich Town winger Kyle Edwards scooped October’s Goal of the Month award for his stunner against Camrbidge United last month. The 24-year-old’s goal in their 3-0 win earned him 42 per cent of the vote.

Meanwhile, Town’s left-back Leif Davis won the player of the month for the second successive month following his summer move from Leeds United, while Freddie Ladapo came second in the running after scoring four goals in October.

The Tractor Boys are in fine form this season as they sit four points from Plymouth Argyle at the top of League One.

Owen Coyle opens up on Bolton Wanderers stint

Former Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle has reflected on his time in Greater Manchester while joining the Under the Cosh podcast. The 56-year-old admitted he felt he did an ‘amazing job’ during his time as manager.

Coyle joined Wanderers in 2010 and managed to keep them up during the 2009/10 season before leading the side to an FA-Cup semi-final. However, they were relegated from the Premier League a few years later before Coyle was sacked in October 2012 with Bolton sat 18th in the Championship.

Speaking on the podcast, Coyle said: “I took Bolton to 14th, kept them up and nine points clear of relegation. “I spent no money. I brought Stuart Holden in on a Bosman from Houston Dynamo. I got Jack Wilshere on loan from Arsenal and I got Vladimir Weiss on loan from Manchester City.

“I never spent any money - Stuart was a free and a minimal salary as well and the other two were kids. We just paid part of their salary, which wasn’t a lot, and it turned that Bolton team around from second bottom of the league and favourites for relegation to nine points clear.

“Even the following year - I know ultimately we lost our place in the Premier League but had there been VAR, we’d never have lost our place. The following year, up until the last seven or eight games of the season when we got Sam Ricketts injured, Stuart Holden injured, players that I couldn’t replace, we were in the top six of the Premier League having spent no money.

“The job we did at Bolton actually in context was an amazing job. Everybody will have their own opinion on it, but we certainly know what we did and what we achieved.”
