Sheffield Wednesday Digest: Barry Bannan makes prediction about Millwall target Josh Windass; Owls linked with former Man United man

Wednesday have rejected a bid from Millwall for Windass’s services and as things stand, the Owls say he is not for sale at any price as they face up to life in League One.

And Bannan, speaking on the Open Goal podcast, said of Windass: “He’s very good, he’s better than I thought he was as well. He’s got everything... powerful, strong, good finisher, good technique. So I was surprised.

“I’ve got a few of my cousins who are Rangers fans, and they weren’t massive fans of him. But I’ve said that he’s top, and I think he could easily play in the Prem down there… I think he could, he’s rapid.”

Owls linked with Barnsley winger – local rivals also keen

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a move for Barnsley winger Luke Thomas – but they don’t seem to be leading the race for his signature.

According to Gloucestershire Live, the Owls are one of several clubs keen on signing the 22-year-old former Derby County man on loan for the upcoming season, with both Bristol Rovers and Doncaster Rovers also said to be keen.

The report adds that the Memorial Stadium remains Thomas’ most likely destination this summer as Joey Barton looks to add to his squad for the 2021/22 League Two campaign.

Owls’ hands-off stance over Windass

Sheffield Wednesday have rejected an offer from Millwall for attacker, Josh Windass and it sounds as though they’re going to keep rebuffing any further approaches as things stand.

The Star reported earlier this week that the Owls had turned down a bid of unknown quantity from the Lions as the Championship club look to bolster their goal threat for 2021/22, while Stoke City are also thought to have joined his list of admirers.

Clubs such as Stoke City, Fulham and Birmingham City are all believed to be keeping a very close eye on the player’s situation at Hillsborough, but the latest word reaching The Star is that any potential suitors will struggle to get a deal done.

It’s understood that – at present – the club have taken a hard line with regards to any potential move away for the forward, and that, on top of rejecting Millwall’s opening offer, they’re currently not open to selling last season’s top scorer at any price.

Wednesday keeping tabs on former Rotherham youngster?

Boss Darren Moore and Wednesday’s head of recruitment David Downes are working hard behind the scenes as they continue to try and plan for the campaign ahead – and one name The Star understands that they’re keeping tabs on is young wide player, Matthew Olosunde.

Olosunde is a free agent as of next week when his Rotherham United contract comes to an end, after the 23-year-old rejected a new contract with the Millers to bring a two-year spell with the club to an end.

The American spent time with Manchester United’s academy after leaving New York Red Bulls in 2016 and while he is thought to be on Wednesday’s list of potential targets, persuading him to join the Owls will be a tough task amid interest from further up the pyramid.

Owls to discover two more opponents tomorrow

Sheffield Wednesday will find out their 2021/22 League One fixture list tomorrow morning, but they won’t be the only opponents that are revealed.

The Owls begin life in the third tier in early August as Darren Moore’s first full season at the club gets underway, and now it’s been confirmed that they will also find out their first opponents in the Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy on the same day.

Wednesday were knocked out of the EFL Cup in the third round last year by Premier League opponents, Fulham, and haven’t played in the EFL Trophy since a first round exit against Bradford City in their 2011/12 League One promotion season.

Brown finds new club after Owls loan spell

Izzy Brown didn’t have the best of times on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, but now he’s found himself a new club.

Brown, 24, was released by Premier League side Chelsea this summer, but has wasted no time in finding himself a new home as he looks to get his career back on track.

The midfielder has signed a one-year deal with a one-year option at Preston North End, and he’ll be desperate to put the 2020/21 season behind him as he focuses on the future.

New Ladies signing gets seal of approval from Millie

Chelsea and England star Millie Bright has spoken of her pride at seeing her younger cousin Ella sign for Sheffield Wednesday Ladies.

The versatile 19-year-old has joined Paul Musacchio’s side, who play in the North East Women's Regional Football League Premier Division, from city rivals Sheffield FC along with goalkeeper Megan Parkin.

"I’m really proud of her, it’s a great opportunity,” said four-time WSL-winner Millie.
