The Owls have a reported transfer embargo looming over them that means they cannot pay any fees – transfer, loan or otherwise – while their ongoing unpaid wage issues mean that even persuading free agents to make the move to Hillsborough is tough at this time.

But Darren Moore and the club’s Head of Recruitment, David Downes, are working hard behind the scenes as they continue to try and plan for the campaign ahead – and one name The Star understands that they’re keeping tabs on is young wide player, Matthew Olosunde.

Olosunde is a free agent as of next week when his Rotherham United contract comes to an end, with the 23-year-old having rejected a new contract with the Millers after a two-year spell with the club.

While the American, who spent a few years with Manchester United’s academy after leaving New York Red Bulls in 2016, is thought to be on Wednesday’s list of potential targets, persuading him to join the Owls will be a tough task amid interest from further up the pyramid.

The former Red Devil, who has played as both a right back and right winger, fits the mould of what Moore is looking for as he rebuilds Wednesday following a number of exits, with his youth, versatility and – possibly most importantly – lack of transfer fee making him a tempting prospect.

But that being said, Wednesday’s off field problems could potentially make it a tough sell with Championship clubs like Preston North End also believed to be keen, and it would no doubt require assurances that the financial situation is being rectified if they’re to stand any chance of getting a deal done.

Wednesday's current crop of players will return to Middlewood Road for testing on Friday before heading out to Wales for a preseason camp a couple of days later – the camp will culminate with a friendly against Scottish giants, Celtic, before they return to Sheffield to continue their preparations for what is set to be a tough first season in League One.
