Former Sheffield United match day pub set to become dessert parlour

Council approves changes to site of once-popular pub

A once-popular Sheffield United match day pub looks set to be converted into a dessert parlour.

Sheffield Council has approved changes to The Barrel pub on London Road, Highfield, which would allow plans for a Dixon’s Milk Ices shop to open up there.

Businessman Sadik Ibrahim only needed approval for the sign, and for some work to the frontage, to go ahead with the scheme, as it will be the same official class of business as the restaurant that the building was most recently home to.

The council approved alterations to the frontage , the removal of existing frames and the front wall, and the enlargement of existing windows. They can also use glass down to the floor, and a fully glazed front door.

A council officer’s report stated: “The last lawful use of the ground floor is understood to have been a restaurant known as D'Ahni’s.” They said that use fell into the same category of the planned milkshake and dessert outlet.”

An artist’s impression of the new sign carries the name Dixon’s Milk Ices.

Dixon’s is a Huddersfield-based chain of ice cream shops which operates in West Yorkshire, with branches including shops in Leeds and Bradford.

Dating back to 1961, the company says on its website: “So where to now after over 60 years?

“We continue to serve our delicious product all year round. We’ve also expanded the business from our two locations in Huddersfield to five shops across West Yorkshire, as well as our customers being able to order Dixon’s via some of the best known delivery apps.”

The Star has approached Dixon’s for more information.

The planning application describes the building as currently vacant, and as having previously been a pub.

The Barrel Inn was a historic pub in the city, which dated back to 1882 and was popular with Sheffield United fans. However, it closed back in November 2022.

It had a red and white colour scheme, mirroring the Blades' home kit.

It later became D'Ahni's Bar & Grill, and had its front changed to display a yellow green and black colour scheme.
