Fighting back - Sheffield Wednesday's post-match 'meeting' after Notts County defeat had 'different angle'

The Owls dropped out of the play-offs in midweek

The inquest into Sheffield Wednesday’s miserable defeat to Notts County had a ‘different angle’ than normal.

The Owls were deservedly beaten 2-0 at Meadow Lane on Tuesday night in a match where they were second best even before going down to 10-men after Jamal Lowe was sent off. Newly-promoted County had only won once all season but Wednesday did not have a single shot on target.

In the days since, Pedersen and his squad have held a meeting, which is not uncommon, but the Owls boss smiled when he said this one had a different ‘angle’ to it, hinting that he may have had some choice words to say.

He told the Star: “I always watch the game after to go through the whole game. We have one who watches through the offensive only, one for defensive only, one for set pieces. Of course, we always make a deep analysis of what we want to have more of, what we don't like to have in the future, and we also have this from the individual development. So we go to each player also. So of course we have always a strong analysis from our performance for what can we learn from this performance and what is our next step, and how do we take them.”

He added: “We always have meetings after games to evaluate our game, to evaluate our performance, if we are winning or losing. maybe this meeting had a different angle, but yeah, we always have a meeting.”

Speaking to the media pitch-side at Meadow Lane late into Tuesday night, Pedersen said his side did not do the ‘basics’ well enough and could not cope with Notts’ physicality. His analysis since has not changed his mind and the players, he says, share his frustration as they now turn their attention to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

“I think it was clear to us what we need more of in this game, and that's why we have had a meeting,” he explained. “We always have meeting, but with this context. They were also not not happy with the first half, but I can feel I have a very hungry group who are really looking forward for the game tomorrow.”
