![Sheffield man, Marcus Hamlin, has been given a 14-and-a-half year sentence after he stabbed a woman and a teenage girl, while in the midst of mental health crisis, during an incident in the Manor area of Sheffield.
The woman and girl attacked by defendant, Marcus Hamlin, were seriously injured in the violent incident, which was carried out on August 29, 2022, Sheffield Crown Court heard.
As he sentenced Hamlin, The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, described the attacker's offending as a 'series of ever-escalating violence' perpetrated against a woman and a teenage girl - complainants A and B, respectively.
Judge Richardson said it must be made 'clear' from the 'outset' that there was an 'important mental health backdrop' to Hamlin's offending.
Detailing the injuries sustained by the complainants during the course of the incident, Judge Richardson said 'A' suffered multiple lacerations to her 'head, neck, face, left leg, right elbow, and both hands'. The lacerations to 'A's' head involved a fracture to the skull, with the one to her cheek being described as being of 'full thickness'. Judge Richardson described the injuries 'A' was left with on one of her hands as being 'life-changing,' and she also had to undergo plastic surgery on the hand.
'B' also suffered 'multiple lacerations' around her 'face, scalp, both shoulders, left forearm, and fingers'. Four of the lacerations to 'B's' scalp were described as 'deep,' one of which was six centimetres long.
Hamlin, aged 31, of Dawlands Close, Manor, Sheffield was initially charged with two counts of attempted murder relating to the attacks, but entered guilty pleas to the lesser charge of wounding with intent, which was accepted by the prosecution.
Judge Richardson jailed Hamlin for nine years, six months, and handed down an extended licence period of five years after judging him to meet the requirements of a 'dangerous' offender, bringing his total sentence to 14 years, six months.](https://www.thestar.co.uk/jpim-static/image/2023/07/21/8/Collage%20Maker-18-Jul-2023-12-24-PM-927%20%281%29.jpg?crop=3:2&width=640)

![Katie Bell, aged 27, was given a second chance by Recorder Andrew Smith MBE in August 2021 when he sentenced her to 18 months' custody, suspended for two years, for two counts of stalking, relating to the 'unpleasant' campaign of abuse she directed towards two complainants. Recorder Smith also made Bell the subject of an indefinite restraining order, preventing her from contacting Complainant A during the same Sheffield Crown Court hearing.
Despite the court orders in place, Bell, of Stradbroke Road, Sheffield, resumed her campaign of abuse against one of the complainants just eight months later, when she posted a series of comments on news articles paying tribute to Complainant A's husband following his death, including one which said: 'serves him right' and another which suggested 'he should have been six-feet-under years ago'.
Bell was brought before Sheffield Crown Court on July 3, 2023 to be sentenced for breaching her restraining order through such conduct, for breaching her suspended sentence order as a consequence, and for an additional charge of malicious communication.
Sentencing Bell for the second time, Recorder Smith told her that when he passed the suspended sentence order 'all the signs were there that you could be rehabilitated,' adding that a reference from her manager at the charity she worked at had persuaded him that Bell 'recognised the harm' she had caused to her victims.
As he sent Bell to begin a 15-month prison sentence, Recorder Smith said that if he were to pass another suspended sentence upon Bell, he believed there was a 'high risk' that she would 'keep her head down,' complete all of the requirements asked of her, and then carry out 'further malicious communications'.](https://www.thestar.co.uk/jpim-static/image/2023/07/21/8/Collage%20Maker-03-Jul-2023-03-47-PM-54%20%281%29.jpg?crop=3:2&width=640)

![South Yorkshire Police have commended the "immense bravery" of a young child, after a Rotherham man was jailed for rape.
Graeme Reed, aged 37, of Maltby, Rotherham, was found guilty of two counts of the rape of a child under 13-years-old during a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, July 13, 2023). His conviction came after a three-day trial and six hours of jury deliberations.
PC Ethan Knight, who investigated Reed's crimes, said: “It is difficult to put into words the level of trauma and suffering Reed’s young victim has experienced. It is simply unimaginable.
“I want to personally commend this child for their immense bravery in telling police what happened. Taking that first step and disclosing sexual abuse can be a daunting step, and the young age of this victim makes their courage even more inspirational.
“The impact of Reed’s heinous crimes cannot be understated either – his victim will undoubtedly require additional support and specialist care for a number of years to come, but I truly hope that the conclusion of legal proceedings marks one step forward in their journey towards recovery."
The judge sentenced Reed to 19 years in prison, plus an additional year on licence. He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and given a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order.](https://www.thestar.co.uk/jpim-static/image/2023/07/21/8/custody-graeme-reed.jpg?crop=3:2&width=484)
