Fresh blow for shoppers as Moor Market vendors confirm no Monday reopening

Sheffield Moor Market will not reopen on Monday, as previously hoped

Waterall Pork Butchers has confirmed it will not reopen on Monday after a meeting with Sheffield Council and Moor Market management, dealing another blow to customers and traders affected by the market's ongoing closure.

The family-run butcher shared the update on social media, saying it was "heartbreaking" to announce the news after hopes the market could reopen at the start of next week.

Moor Market has now been closed for more than a week after German cockroaches were discovered at the city centre venue.

The closure has affected more than 50 traders and 12 cafés, with Sheffield Council saying the market will only reopen once monitoring records multiple consecutive days with no pest activity.

In a statement, Waterall Pork Butchers said: "We're really sorry to have to share this news with you.

"After meeting with the Council and the management team at Moor Market, we unfortunately have to confirm that we won't be opening on Monday.

"This is as disappointing for us as it is for all of you. We know how much our amazing customers look forward to coming down to the market, and it genuinely breaks our hearts that we can't be there for you right now."

The butchers said they continued to support fellow traders and the council as work continues to make the market safe.

The statement continued: "Please know that we continue to fully support all the local traders and the Council as they work to make the market safe again for everyone. We're all in this together.

"Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your patience and understanding. Your support means more to us than you know.

"We'll keep you updated as soon as we have any news."

The latest update follows confirmation from Sheffield Council that the market will remain shut until inspectors are satisfied the pest problem has been fully eradicated.

Councillor Mark Rusling, chair of the council's environmental service and regulation policy committee, previously said pest activity had reduced significantly following intensive cleaning, treatment and monitoring, but stressed the authority was taking a cautious approach to protect public health.

The extended closure continues to leave dozens of independent businesses unable to trade, with many thanking loyal customers for their patience while they await news of a reopening date.
