What made Cambridge United boss laugh after 'strong' Sheffield Wednesday draw
Both teams had reasons to be disappointed not to have won out a 1-1 draw between Sheffield Wednesday and Cambridge United.
Cambridge United boss Neil Harris took heart from the nature of their 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday - not least because of their more recent experiences at the ground.
The Us came from behind to peg Wednesday back in Matt Hamshaw’s first match as caretaker boss following confirmation the departure of Henrik Pedersen on Sunday. Mason Burstow put the Owls in the lead before Sulley Kaikai pulled things level, with both sides having opportunities to claim the three points in a game that saw momentum change waver.
A strong start to the season for newly-promoted Cambridge sees them seventh, two points ahead of their Tuesday hosts having played a game more. Harris spoke with a grin post-match following a conversation with director of football Mark Bonner, who oversaw gruesome 5-0 and 6-0 defeats to Darren Moore’s Wednesday side during the Owls’ last stint in League One.
Harris told club media: “Me and Bons (Bonner) were just laughing there, he said ‘It’s much better than the last couple of times we’ve been here!’ It’s fine for us to laugh about it and it shows what a massive leap forward we’ve taken as a club, which Bons has played such a massive part in obviously.
“To come and in some ways be disappointed with getting a 1-1 draw shows how far we’ve come and how well we’re doing. I thought it was an entertaining game of football with a lot of chances at both ends. Sheffield Wednesday showed real quality with the ball and I think their attacking, with Barry Bannan and Billy Mitchell and then their front four, was outstanding.
“We defended really well with it, we had some good saves, one off the line, a bit of luck when Baz hits the post. But at the other end we had so many chances. There were a couple of clearances off the line, Ash makes some good saves for them. We’re disappointed with some of our finishes but ultimately the credit goes to the players for coming and getting a point here at Hillsborough.
“We’ve got a lot of young players in the side and it’s about what it is to come here and play for the first time. Those are the positives, it’s a strong point that we take into Saturday.”
