First gigs announced for Sheffield O2 Academy after re-opening - Oasis fans will be happy

First shows to take place have been announced for March

The first shows have been announced for one of Sheffield’s legendary music venues, as it prepares to re-open after three years.

The O2 Academy, next to Arundel Gate in the city centre, announced last week that it would be re-opening in February 2027, more than three years after if closed because of safety issues involving reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in the roof.

But after a major repair and refurbishment project, the venue, formerly the Top Rank and The Roxy, is close to re-opening, with the first gigs now announced.

And the first of the shows lined up is good news for Oasis fans.

The first show booked at the venue at present is the Oasis tribute act Definitely Mightbe on Friday March 5.

Then, the following night, Saturday March 6, the venue is set to host The Pineapple Thief, playing a show as part of their 2027 European Tour.

The Star asked people in Sheffield city centre who they would like to see booked at the venue - with a huge variety of answers.

Rafe Cox, from Rivelin, said: “I’d probably like to see Reverend and the Makers, because I saw them at Tramlines, and thought one of their songs was really good to see them at a new venue.”

Amber Barker, from Handsworth, said: “I’d maybe say Fontaines DC, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think they’re so good, I absolutely love them..”

Lisa Corry, from Handsworth was optimistic. She said she’d like to see East 17, Madonna, or Aitch, the rapper.

Dave Mann, from Arbouthorne wanted to see Phil Collins signed up. He said: “He’s probably one of the old artists that’s still going - he’s my era!”

Eileen Thornber, from Dronfield, said the last time she went there, she saw Squeeze. doing a revival tour. She added: “They’re are our era, so anything from the 1980s or 90s era we’d go an watch. We’d really rather have REM but I don’t think they’ll be going there.”

Peter Thornber, also from Dronfield, wanted to see Beautiful South tribute band The South booked. He added: “Or Paul Heaton coming back, because it would be in Sheffield - it would be appropriate for Sheffield.”
