South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: “We received a call at 11.30am for reports of a road traffic collision involving a van and a child on Hutcliffe Wood Road, near Chancet Wood, in Sheffield.

“It is understood that a blue Ford Transit was in collision with a young child. The ambulance service attended and the child was taken to hospital.

“The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries. The road was closured for a short while, but has since re-opened.”

It is understood that the road was closed for around an hour.

Locals have described the police cordon after the incident, which saw police tape stretched across the street.

Several described a large police presence.

Sarah Exelby, who runs the Hush hair and beauty salon, which is situated close to the cordon, said she and her staff had been concerned by the police presence, and added that having since heard what had happened, their thoughts were with the injured child.

She said: “There were a couple of unmarked police cars, and about four police cars with all the markings.

“We had heard a scream, and obviously were worried. We saw someone taken away in an ambulance.

“It was very upsetting to see.”
