Sheffield RUFC: Helping young people build physical fitness, mental confidence and deep-rooted friendships

Sheffield RUFC are inviting young people to head down to Abbeydale Park to experience training sessions

There has been much written in recent times about Sheffield Rugby Club and their rise to play in National One, the nationalised third tier of rugby union. This recognition is quite rightly deserved but this success hasn’t happened overnight. It follows a longstanding investment in their mini and junior sections within the club and its pathway into Senior rugby.

The success of the youth setup is embodied in Ben Whitney, the current Men's Club Captain. Having started his journey as a Sheffield Mini & Junior player, Ben recently captained the 1st XV to their first-ever league title, securing a historic promotion, and he continues in this role in their National One campaign. The club are proud to share that several of their senior squad have risen through the M&J ranks. When a youngster joins the junior ranks at Abbeydale, they are truly stepping into a pipeline for future sporting success for those that want it.

The Age Grade section represents the vibrant heartbeat of rugby at Sheffield RUFC which is based at Abbeydale Sports Club. It welcomes boys and girls from Under 7s all the way through to their Colts Academy which play in the under 18s Yorkshire league. It has one of the largest age grade sections in the area.

The club also has a dedicated girl’s section known as Sheffield Swans which is for girls aged between 12 though to 18, with a clear path for them to graduate into the Senior Ladies environment.

The overarching priority for all of their mini and junior sections is defined by enjoyment, controlled activity, and providing both physical and mental health benefits. The club help promote the core values of rugby which gives young people skills for life. The RFU Core values are:

·       Teamwork

·       Respect

·       Enjoyment

·       Discipline

·       Sportsmanship

The Sheffield RUFC Family are also guided by a resolute "#ONECLUB" philosophy.

At the start of the season the club ensured that all mini and junior squads wear the exact matching kit design used by the Men's First XV. This visually solidifies the bridge between its grassroots youth and senior ranks. Thanks to sponsorship from local companies, new home kits were provided to every single age-grade player completely free of charge. The primary goal of this initiative is to eliminate potential financial barriers that often prevent young families from exploring community sports. The club also has a Community Foundation which offers financial assistance to those in need and helps to attract new players from more diverse backgrounds.

The development path is carefully curated to adapt to a child’s natural growth:

  • The Mini Section (U7–U12): Focuses heavily on spatial awareness, core coordination, and fun. Youngsters start with non-contact Tag rugby. By the Under-9 stage, coaches introduce contact gradually, placing paramount emphasis on teaching proper, safe tackling techniques and defensive body positioning in a highly supportive environment.
  • The Junior Section (U13–U16): Moves into the deeper tactical concepts of rugby union.
  • Sheffield RUFC Colts Academy (U17–U18): Serves as the ultimate elite proving ground, transitioning teenage athletes smoothly into senior men’s rugby and is currently accepting new players. It operates two teams within Yorkshire Leagues, as well as Yorkshire and National Cup competitions.

Whether your child is picking up a rugby ball for the first time or is an experienced player looking for a new competitive challenge, they will find an inclusive and welcoming environment at Sheffield RUFC.

Newcomers of all ages are invited to head down to Abbeydale Park to experience training sessions. Information can be found on their website: www.sheffieldrufc.co.uk

The club are particularly interested to here from young people in school years Y6, Y8, Y10 & Y11. There are no trials and there is no pressure to join.
