She posted that she had: "Loved every bloody second of it and raced this one like it was my last one for a while (because I have to know that it could well be). "

And she took the opportunity to pay homage to American distance runner Stephanie Bruce, who at 42 is an inspirational figure for female athletes.

Stephanie finished a few seconds behind Calli, who said: "Like the superwoman she is - tracked me down, and I only just held her off by the skin of my teeth."

Calli has been training with Stephanie over the past few weeks in Flagstaff, Arizona and added: "I knew we would have a close battle out there.

"Seeing her come in right after me made me so happy as you can’t not be so impressed by Steph.

"An amazing role model to so many, a fierce competitor, an incredible mum to three beautiful children" said Calli, the second-fastest British female marathon runner of all time.

"But more importantly people like her make me believe in myself and what’s possible as a mum to be.

"And on that note… Happy UK Mother’s Day to all the amazing mummas out there! "

Calli concluded: "So proud of my little family of three today — and another finisher's medal for our little legend to add to his collection."
