Sheffield Wednesday sign former Birmingham City and MK Dons goalkeeper
The Owls have made signing number 10 of the summer so far
Sheffield Wednesday have added Connal Trueman to their goalkeeping ranks.
The 30-year-old joins on a free transfer from MK Dons and becomes signing number 10 of the summer. He has signed a one-year contact, with a one-year club option. His other clubs include Birmingham City, Millwall and loans at the likes of AFC Wimbledon, Swindon Town, Oxford United and Crawley Town.
He said: “It's a massive club and at the moment especially, it feels like a really good time to be here. I think you can really feel the buzz around the place and you can feel there is the start of a new chapter, a new era, and I'm buzzing to be here and be a part of that. We are going to go for promotion this year, that's what it's all about, so anytime that's dangled in front of you, it's really, really exciting.”
Owls sporting director, Simon Wilson, added: “Connal is a player that we are familiar with and he arrives with terrific references on and off the pitch - he is a talented goalkeeper and another great character to add to the group. He was part of a promotion-winning team last year and understands the daily standard required to be successful. We are delighted to welcome him to Sheffield Wednesday and add him to our squad ahead of the new season.”
Trueman is the second goalkeeper Wednesday have signed this off-season, following the arrival of Joe Lumley from Bristol City on a free transfer. As first reported by The Wednesday Word, they are also expected to bring in former Charlton Athletic and Dundee United stopper, Ashley Maynard-Brewer, 30. The keeper department needed to be rebuilt after the departure of Pierce Charles to Manchester City and the expiration of Murphy Cooper’s loan.
Trueman has not played a lot of regular football, with his CV showing he has played fewer than 80 matches, including 14 in the Championship, 29 in League One and 15 in League Two. He made seven outings for MK Dons, who said they were in discussions with him over a new deal when announcing their retained list, in all competitions last season.
The Birmingham City fan came though the club’s academy from the age of 11 and spent 15 years there. Former Owls manager Garry Monk gave him his Blues debut on the first day of the 2018/2019 season.
Trueman could make his non-competitive Owls debut this weekend when Wednesday face Accrington Stanley (12.30pm) and Oldham Athletic (4pm) on Saturday.
