Henrik Pedersen issues Sheffield Wednesday transfer update as EFL talks continue

The January transfer window has officially opened for business - but Sheffield Wednesday are still waiting for clarity on their situation.

Manager Henrik Pedersen has confirmed talks between Sheffield Wednesday and the EFL are continuing following the opening of the January transfer window.

The window opened for business on Thursday, allowing clubs to strengthen their squads for the second half of the campaign.

Wednesday, of course, are desperate to bring in some fresh blood after being decimated both during the summer and more recently because of a mounting injury crisis, leaving them short on senior players.

Centre-back Liam Cooper, who occupied one of the two free agent slots the Owls were given permission to fill in November, was forced off in New Year’s Day’s 3-0 defeat to Preston North End because of a groin injury, meaning it looks as though he will be the latest addition to the Owls’ long list of absentees.

With the club still in administration and the takeover process still ongoing, it remains to be seen if the Owls will be allowed to bring in any new signings this month.

“I know there's a dialogue between the club and EFL now,” Pedersen told The Star, speaking after his side’s defeat at Deepdale.

“I hope that we get an answer very, very soon, and hopefully we can do some things so we can get some support to the players.

“At the minute there's a dialogue, but we need some clarity about what we can do.”

As things currently stand, it is understood Wednesday, in the event of them receiving the green light they are hoping for from the EFL, will be restricted to free agent signings and loan deals that do not require a fee.

Wednesday are still operating under the terms of a fee restriction ban, meaning they are not allowed to sign any players for a fee until the conclusion of the 2027 winter transfer window.

However, there is hope that particular sanction could be lifted ahead of this summer’s transfer window if the takeover is finalised ahead of that juncture.
