What Andy Rinomhota would bring to Sheffield Wednesday amid transfer interest
Sheffield Wednesday are running the rule over Reading midfielder Andy Rinomhota ahead of the summer transfer window.
Reading midfielder Andy Rinomhota has already outlined how he would bring a little bit of everything to Sheffield Wednesday amid their interest in his signature ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
As reported by The Star on Monday, the 29-year-old is one of many names being considered by the Owls ahead of the transfer window officially opening on June 15.
A major squad rebuild is required at Hillsborough this summer as they prepare for life in League One under the stewardship of new their ownership group, Arise Capital Partners. The US consortium completed their purchase of the Owls just over a month ago.
Wednesday need to add fresh blood to their squad across the board this summer, meaning it is hard to pinpoint, at this stage, one particular transfer objective ranking among any other. However, their midfield is in desperate need of reinforcements following the departures of Jaden Heskey, who has returned to Manchester City following his loan spell in S6, Nathaniel Chalobah, Marvelous Nakamba and Rio Shipston.
As things currently stand, Svante Ingelsson is the only senior midfielder on Wednesday’s books, and there is no guarantee he will stay at Hillsborough this summer amid interest from elsewhere. The Owls have triggered a one-year extension in his contract to tie him down until the summer of 2027, but there is still a chance bids could come in for him.
Although Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has addressed his hunger to change the Owls’ business model in a bid to develop young talent and sell them on for a profit in the future, there is still an argument for the club to recruit some experienced heads, and Rinomhota would certainly provide plenty of know-how, making 213 Championship appearances combined for Reading (his first spell at the club), Rotherham United and Cardiff City.
And it was following his arrival at Cardiff in June 2022 when he outlined exactly what sort of midfielder he is and what he can bring to the table.

He told Cardiff’s YouTube channel: “I would say I am a box-to-box [midfielder], but I can sit and be more defensive as well. I like to break up play.
“On the ball, I like to drive with the ball, get past players, break on forward, make third man runs beyond the striker. I like to do a bit of everything.”
Rinomhota, who is a Zimbabwe international, spent three seasons at Cardiff, making 82 appearances, before leaving in June last year and returning to Reading in November.
A product of the Royals’ academy, Rinomhota struggled for game time at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in 2025/26 because personal issues collided with boss Leam Richardson’s selection policy. Injuries also played their part in him featuring just three times.
Rinomhota has been on Wednesday’s radar before, previously being identified as a potential target in the 2024 January transfer window before he moved to Rotherham on loan.
