Sheffield Wednesday consider experienced midfielder ahead of squad rebuild mission
Sheffield Wednesday are expected to be among the EFL’s busiest clubs heading into the summer transfer window.
One of the many names being considered as part of Sheffield Wednesday’s vast squad rebuild project is Reading midfielder Andy Rinomhota, The Star understands.
The Owls are at the starting line of a busy summer as they prepare for life in League One, with new owners Arise Capital Partners having vowed to build a competitive outfit after the squad was gutted of star performers and hot prospect youngsters across the last two windows. Wednesday will operate under some recruitment restrictions going forward, though they are not believed to be too hampering and can be eased by the sale of players.
Though exploratory work has been undertaken, with analysis and preparations for the third tier stretching back several weeks, word is that the bulk of Wednesday’s big decisions remain on ice for the time being ahead of the official arrival of incoming sporting director Simon Wilson from Stockport County. Work is busily taking place behind the scenes to continue to formulate target lists and sound-out potential targets.
Among those sound-outs, The Star understands, is renewed target Rinomhota. As reported by The Reading Chronicle, the Zimbabwe international is among the options being weighed-up by Wednesday, though the ultimate likelihood of any deal remains unknown at this early stage. The now 29-year-old was of cursory interest to the Owls in previous windows, including in January 2024 when he ultimately joined Rotherham United on loan from Cardiff City.
Rinomhota barely featured on his return to Reading last season, when personal issues collided with Leam Richardson’s selection policy and injury to limit his involvement to three outings. He did show enough to push the Royals to offer him a new contract, however, though this appears to be unsettled as things stand. He has 213 appearances at Championship level on his CV and was a key man for both Reading - in a first spell - and latterly the Bluebirds.
