Carlos Carvalhal outlines Sheffield Wednesday hope - and faraway prospect of managerial return
Carlos Carvalhal recently made an emotional return to Hillsborough stadium - and wishes the best for the club.
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has outlined his ongoing love for the club - and outlined his hope for its brighter future.
The club was taken over at the turn of last month and is at the outset of a dramatic rebuild effort under US consortium Arise Capital Partners. Carvalhal spent two-and-a-half seasons as manager of the Owls between 2015 and 2017 and keeps up to speed with the goings-on at S6 from afar.
“I have such an emotional connection with the club,” the Portuguese told The Star. “I look all the time at the score, my phone has the Sofascore and I have all the time Sheffield Wednesday for every goal, every time. I am of course very sad with what happened with the club, I am very unhappy with all of the situations and how the club has not developed in the last seasons. But I saw what happened in the last game, it gives hope to the club.
“I am very happy that someone has come with good ideas and I am very happy that there are no deducted points in next season. This is very important. I was really, really very proud to see in the last game that they had a full stadium. It was completely full, it was so emotional to see that.”
Carvalhal has managed seven clubs since his time at Hillsborough, his last stint arriving at Braga in 2025. He has since worked in the media. Speaking on the unlikely event of a second turn with the Owls sometime in the future, he joined the long list of football figures to speak positively on the job Henrik Pedersen has done at S6 but refused to rule anything out sometime in the future.
“I don’t know,” he smiled. “The people in Portugal say never go back a second time to the place that you were happy. But I was at Vitoria Setubal, we were promoted, I went back and we won the cup and went to European competitions. I was in Braga, I went back and we won the Cup of Portugal. So, you never know.”
