Defender signs new Sheffield Wednesday contract after making first team breakthrough

Sheffield Wednesday youngster Joe Emery has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract.

Sheffield Wednesday have announced that youngster Joe Emery has signed a new contract at Hillsborough.

The centre-back, 19, has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal, with a club option of a further year. The Owls, at the time of issuing their retained list in May, confirmed that they had exercised an option to keep the youngster in S6.

Emery, who joined the Owls’ academy from Charlton Athletic as a first-year apprentice, worked his way up the rungs of the club’s academy system before graduating to the first team last season.

Fresh from signing his first professional contract at Hillsborough in July last year, the defender made his debut for the Owls in the first round of the Carabao Cup, helping a youthful Wednesday side overcome Bolton Wanderers on penalties after an entertaining 3-3 draw.

That was the first of seven appearances Emery made for the first team last term. After featuring in the Carabao Cup ties against Leeds United and Grimsby Town, the defender also started the Owls' 2-0 defeat to Brentford in the third round of the FA Cup at Hillsborough.

He made his Championship debut as a late substitute in Wednesday's 2-0 defeat to Bristol City at Ashton Gate towards the end of January.

Emery told the Owls’ in-house media: “It’s a great club with a great history and hopefully a great future. So I’m very excited to be here and play my part.

“The standard of training is the best it’s ever been for me. I’m really enjoying it and learning off of new players and playing with them, it helps you improve.”

Emery has become the second Wednesday youngster to sign a new contract this week, following confirmation on Monday that midfielder Jarvis Thornton had signed a new two-year deal.
