Sheffield Wednesday's League One rivals closing in on Owls target as medical 'booked' - report

Leicester City are reportedly closing in on the signing of Ipswich Town ace Wes Burns.

Leicester City are reportedly closing in on the signing of Sheffield Wednesday transfer target Wes Burns from Ipswich Town.

According to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, Burns is due to ‘undergo a medical’ ahead of finalising a move to the King Power Stadium.

The Star revealed Wednesday’s interest in Burns, 31, in June, but also warned that they faced healthy competition for his signature, both domestically and from abroad. The former Bristol City man was out of contract at the end of June and, at that stage, had not put pen to paper on a new deal at Portman Road, meaning he was set to be available on a free transfer.

However, Ipswich, on July 5, confirmed that Burns had signed a new one-year deal at the club, boosting his chances of experiencing a second season as a Premier League player. He made 18 top flight appearances for the Tractor Boys during the 2024/25 campaign.

Despite signing a new deal in Suffolk, Burns is now reportedly set to join Leicester, who, alongside Wednesday, will be targeting an immediate return to the Championship this season. The Foxes suffered a shock relegation last term, finishing 23rd in the table.

Should the Wales international finalise a move to the King Power Stadium, he will be reunited with his former Ipswich teammate Conor Chaplin, who joined the Foxes on a free transfer earlier this summer. The duo played key roles in helping Ipswich secure automatic promotion from League One in the 2022/23 season, scoring 34 goals between them.

As previously reported, Wednesday faced stiff competition for Burns’ signature, including interest from clubs in MLS, meaning there was never any guarantee that he would have ended up at Hillsborough this summer, regardless of his contract situation at Ipswich. Having signed a new deal in Suffolk last month, Leicester are now expected to have to pay a fee to secure the winger’s services.

Owls manager Henrik Pedersen confirmed during the club’s recent tour of Hungary and Austria that the club remains keen to sign a right-sided winger this summer. Louie Barry has been brought in to operate on the left flank, while fellow summer signing Jordi Liongola’s exact position remains unclear due to his versatility.
