Sheffield Wednesday's transfer position on Wrexham midfielder George Dobson
The transfer window closes on September 1
Sheffield Wednesday have continued to hold an interest in Wrexham’s George Dobson, The Star understands, although a deal could still prove difficult.
As first reported by us last month, The Owls are admirers of the 28-year-old central midfielder, who made 40 appearances in the Championship last season. At the time, however, it was understood that any move could be tough to achieve and that it may be one they revisit later in the transfer window, which closes on September 1.
Reports elsewhere claim Wednesday are ‘advancing’ in talks to sign Dobson on loan, while The Star’s understanding remains the same, that he has been a player of interest, while Championship clubs were also keen. Given the number of appearances he made in a successful Championship side last season, he is likely to have options in the second-tier.
Dobson joined Wrexham in 2024 and has played 94 times for the Welsh club, winning promotion from League One before playing 40 times in the second tier last time out. He has also played for the likes of Walsall, Charlton Athletic, Sunderland and AFC Wimbledon.
Meanwhile, Wrexham are reportedly closing on the signing of 30-year-old midfielder Ben Whiteman from Preston, so it remains to be seen if that changes anything.
Wednesday have made 12 summer signings so far, and currently have ex-Everton central midfielder, Tyler Onyango, 23, training with them. They return to action on Saturday at home to Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.
Speaking previously about the transfer window, Owls sporting director, Simon Wilson, said: “There are patterns to it, isn’t there? I think people try to get their business done early as much as possible. Ours is an extreme case because we need so many players, so we are probably more active than most.
“As players come back and moves start to get made, there can be another round of activity, and there is obviously a lot more activity towards the end of the window. We are prepared that it might be messy for us this year.
“Everyone is cool with that, we’re going to work through it, we’re going to make sure we maximise the opportunities that we have got. We can still improve things as we build out this team.”
