'Unbelievable pro' - Matt Hamshaw hails Sheffield Wednesday summer signing after latest outing

Reece James has been excellent since returning to Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer during the summer.

Caretaker boss Matt Hamshaw has described Sheffield Wednesday left-back Reece James as “an unbelievable pro” after he delivered another strong performance in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Cambridge United.

James was restored to the starting line-up for Cambridge’s visit to Hillsborough and arguably provided Wednesday’s biggest attacking threat, constantly bombing forward from left-back, particularly in the second half as the Owls went up through the gears.

Enjoying plenty of success down the left flank, James, who returned to Hillsborough in August, delivered ten crosses that, on another day, could have earned him at least one or two assists. He also registered three key passes.

James started because fellow left-back Max Lowe lined up at centre-back alongside Ernie Weaver. James returned to S6 during the summer to provide depth and cover at left-back, with Lowe expected to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Although Lowe has recently returned from a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, James has produced a string of consistent performances to strengthen his case for retaining the left-back spot and give his teammate a run for his money.

“Reece has done really well,” Hamshaw, who worked with the defender at Rotherham United, told The Star. “He’s an unbelievable pro, he’s an unbelievable lad, as they all are. I have no issues with any of them.

“He’s done really well tonight. And I think, considering he was kind of a back-up left-back when we signed him, he’s played more or less every minute since he came in.

“So, fair play to him. I don’t need to explain to Wednesday fans; they’ve seen him in a promotion-winning team, so they know how good he is.

“So, I’m pleased for Reece, yes.”
