New Sheffield Wednesday boss will take over a club 'going places', coach predicts
SWFC are without a manager after Henrik Pedersen’s sacking
Sheffield Wednesday’s new manager will be taking over a club that is ‘definitely going places’, says Matt Hamshaw.
The Owls are no strangers to turbulence after last season but they will be hoping for a smoother ride once the appointment of a new manager is confirmed following Henrik Pedersen’s sacking.
Hamshaw is in caretaker charge until a new permanent boss is found and he oversaw Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw against Cambridge United. He is also set to take the next game against Blackpool at Hillsborough on Sunday. Whoever comes through the door next, Hamshaw believes they will inherit a good squad and a club which is on the rise, but patience will be needed.
He told The Star: “I think that the club is obviously in a big transition phase, and you can't just click your fingers and everything happen overnight. But at the same time, I know from what I've seen and the people in charge now and where the club wants to be, this club's definitely going places, and I think the fans will really enjoy the ride. Whoever's next has got a real good squad of players, and they've got something to build on.”
Former Stockport County boss Dave Challinor remains the favourite for the job and all signs point towards hm being Pedersen’s successor.
Hamshaw continued: “There's going to be bumps in the road as we've already seen, and I think that is football. It's a bit of a rollercoaster, but the good thing that these fans do is stick behind the players and the team. And even today, I know they're disappointed. I'm disappointed, but the fans stay and clap the players off. And I know from playing here, they want people to put a shift in, and they want that hard work and that grit, and I think at times you saw that again. I keep repeating myself, not consistent enough, but you saw that, and we firmly believe what we've got in that dressing room.”
Wednesday are ninth in League One after the first 12 games. They could climb back into the play-offs with against Blackpool this weekend before the league season pauses for a week due to the FA Cup first round.
