The 27-year-old shot-stopper saw his contract with LaLiga outfit, Elche, expire at the end of last month, so he’s now on the lookout for the next step in his career after a difficult spell in in the Spanish top-flight.

In almost two years with Elche he made just five appearances in all competitions, with his most productive season coming in 2020/21 when he went on loan to Atlético de San Luis – so he’ll now be eager to try and tie down a regular spot somewhere as he weighs up his options going forward.

Werner did have success in the Europa League during his time with Atletico Madrid, though, playing two games in the successful 2017/18 campaign where he played largely third fiddle to Jan Oblak and Miguel Ángel Moyà.

According to Spanish journalist, Angel Garcia, Wednesday have shown an interest in the former Boca Juniors loanee, with Premier League outfit, Crystal Palace, also reportedly keeping an eye on him as a potential option to bolster their goalkeeping department.

Whether anything more comes of the reported interest remains to be seen at this point, however with Cameron Dawson being the only senior goalkeeper at the club there is no doubt that they will be in the market for another shot-stopper before the transfer window comes to a close on September 1st.

So far the Owls’ only bit of transfer business has been the return of Reece James.
