Sheffield Wednesday defender, Liam Palmer, says Neil Warnock’s comments last night will give the club extra motivation – not that they need it, though.

The Owls are clinging on by the skin of their teeth in the Championship at present, with an important win over Blackburn Rovers earlier this week meaning that they’re now just four points away from climbing out of the relegation zone.

Former Sheffield United boss, Neil Warnock gave them a bit of a helping hand on Wednesday evening as his Middlesbrough side beat fellow strugglers, Rotherham United, but he could still be the man to send them down this coming weekend if results don’t go their way.

Warnock, a well-known Blade himself, stoked the fire after the game last night, saying, “I want us to try twice as hard on Saturday, being a Unitedite.”

For Palmer, as a Wednesdayite who has come through the ranks at Hillsborough, he’s got more on the line than many of the others, and he will eager to keep up his good form and make sure they’re still in the Championship come Saturday night.

“We’ve obviously faced them, and got a positive result… They’re in a good position in the league, and have got talented players,” he said, before adding with wry smile, “But I think judging by some comments last night, if they want to give us extra motivation – not that we need it – then that’s something that will drive us on definitely.”

When asked if it’d be nice to ‘throw those words back’, he said with a grin, “So to speak, yeah. I won’t say too much.”

The 29-year-old has spent practically his entire career at Wednesday, and has played in League One before, but admits that they’re not looking around to see what’s happening elsewhere – despite needing favours from other clubs – at this point time.

He also told the media this morning, “While the numbers are possible, all we can do is just keep believing… We’re just focusing on the stuff we can effect, and just trying to pick up the maximum points between now and the end of the season. All the outside stuff, all the other teams, is not really for us to worry about as players.”
