Wednesday face Bournemouth this evening as they seek to end a four-game losing streak in the Championship, with Wildsmith expected to get the nod in goal after a solid personal showing against Wycombe Wanderers over the weekend.

Wildsmith, a lifelong Owl himself, knows the result wasn’t good enough, but was pleased to be out there.

He told the club’s official website, “It was good to play… Obviously it’s been disappointing not to start this season because that’s what you want to do, play games. But I feel I’m working hard, day in, day out in training and have just been ready for that opportunity – it felt good to be back out there and help the boys.

“The result wasn’t great. That final ball, that last bit of quality let us down a bit. But personally yes, it was great to be back out there and put on that shirt.”

And now they face an even greater challenge as the Cherries come to town, with the fact that the Owls haven’t won since February at Hillsborough coinciding with the visitor’s unbeaten start to the 2020/21 campaign.

Speaking of their opponents, the shot-stopper said, “Bournemouth have got a lot of quality, they’ve come down from the Premier League and have got some good players there. We need to go out there and show what we’ve got.

“We need a good result to get us going and that will naturally lift spirits even higher.

“Everyone is upbeat, we’re not taking it to heart, we know the situation that we’re in. We understand how important it is to put points on the board.

“We’ve definitely got it in us, we don’t take any negativity from the results, we have to stay positive and we can only affect the next game.

“We go again on Tuesday night and we’ll give it our best shot, we have quality to beat anyone on our day so, I think it will be a good game and hopefully we’ll get a good result.”
