October didn’t go well for the Owls and Garry Monk, but with a new month comes new possibilities, and the Wednesday boss will be desperate to try and turn things around as they return to Hillsborough.

Wednesday host Bournemouth in S6 tomorrow evening on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wycombe Wanderers, and they’re in search of their first win at home in over eight months.

Since getting an impressive away win away at Birmingham City, Wednesday have lost consecutive games against Brentford, Luton Town, Rotherham United and Wycombe, losing four in a row for the first time since Jos Luhukay’s reign in 2018.

If the Cherries, who are the only unbeaten team left in the Championship this season, inflict another defeat on the Owls then they will have lost five in a row for the first time since the 2012/13 season when they survived the drop under Dave Jones.

Coincidentally, the 2020/21 campaign has been almost a mirror image of that season in 2012/13, with Wednesday having picked up exactly the same amount of points (8) after nine games as they did that year – losing five in a row before a draw at Burnley brought the run to an end for a team that included the likes of Michail Antonio, Ross Barkley, Chris O’Grady and Jay Bothroyd.

It did get worse before it got better though, with Jones’ side ending up going on a run of seven consecutive defeats between November and December before a major turnaround saw them lose just six of their last 25 games and finish 18th.

It is worth noting, however, that a 12-point deduction would have sent them down in 23rd-place.

This season will be a season of big months for Monk and Wednesday, especially as they still find themselves on -4 going into November, and it would certainly set them back on track if they were to get a result against a Bournemouth side that are expected to be in the running for a return to the Premier League come the end of the campaign.
