Matt Hamshaw on his Sheffield Wednesday future, Henrik Pedersen's sacking and managing at Hillsborough

The Owls are looking for a new permanent manager

Matt Hamshaw says he would like to stay on at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls are searching for a new manager after the sacking of Henrik Pedersen at the weekend following successive defeats. Inconsistency in results, performances and style of play were the reasons given for his firing. Former Stockport County boss Dave Challinor is the favourite for the job.

Hamshaw, a former Wednesday player, who won promotion with the club in 2005, is in interim charge and was in the dugout for Tuesday night’ 1-1 draw against Cambridge United. He was part of Pedersen’s backroom staff, joining earlier this season.

Asked whether he would like to stay on at the club, Hamshaw told The Star: “100%. I had opportunities at other clubs before I come here. Henrik kind of brought me here, but I'd like to think I'm a club appointment, so I'd like to think I'd stay. However, I'm not naive enough to think that football changes and managers may come in and see it differently. So, look, it is what it is. But it's not about me. It's about this club getting the right man in charge, whoever the board of directors feel that may be. Everybody coming together and then hitting our goals and targets that we need to.”

On whether it was surprise when he heard the news about Pedersen, Hamshaw continued: “It was a surprise. If I'm being 100% honest, I kind of didn't see it coming. I thought it might have been a bit longer, but that's just my personal opinion. So, the board makes a decision. And like I said, look, the owner is fantastic. Michael and David have done unbelievable things already. You’ve only got to look round Hillsborough. I remember coming here last year and there was no running water in the North Stand. Where we are now as a football club, and our club's developing, but you can't click your fingers and things instantly happen overnight. We'd all like them to, but it's going to take a little bit of time.”

Right now, Hamshaw is preparing to lead the team against on Sunday against Blackpool, saying it is a huge ‘honour.’ So after running out at Hillsborough as a player, what was it like to be a manager at S6?

“It's hard to explain at this moment in time,” he said. “I think I'll probably look back with great satisfaction and honour, and what a joy it is. At this moment in time, I'm just disappointed because I want to win games of football, and I know that you can't let teams get away from you in this league, and that's my frustration. But it's not about me; it's about the fans. It's about the players. It's about the club moving forward. So that's kind of the message, but probably if you ask me in four weeks' time or whatever, I think I'll probably have immense pride. “

He added: “I didn't find it stressful. Oddly, I know probably some people around this dugout will disagree. I just want to keep encouraging players. I was frustrated in the first 15 minutes because I wanted to really get a fast start and get an early goal, and that's the frustration, I felt like we we didn't do that, and that was my frustration.”
