Despite confirming the budget placed at his disposal does not contain “head turning numbers”, the United manager thanked Bramall Lane’s new board, including owner HRH Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, for helping to finance a £50m recruitment drive during the close season as he prepared United for top-flight football.

However, despite watching his newly promoted team move into contention for European qualification, Wilder believes it is imperative United re-enter the transfer market to avoid injuries, suspensions or even fatigue undermining their progress.

“But there are a couple of key positions where we need to strengthen. We need to do it and the board know that.”
