Yellow health warning issued as Sheffield set to bake in temperatures of 27 degrees as heatwave continues

A warning has been issued

Health warnings for heat are in place across England this week as Britain braces for its fourth heatwave of the year, with highs of 27C predicted for Sheffield.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber warnings for risk to health for the East Midlands, East of England and the South East, where temperatures could top 33C.

In Sheffield, the Met Office is predicting a hot but cloudy week peaking at 27C on Wedneday, July 27.

It comes after numerous grass fires in South Yorkshire, as well as wildfires in the nearby Peak District.

The UKHSA said: “The existing yellow heat-health alert for the East Midlands, East of England, South East and London has been upgraded to amber and will be in place from 9am on Tuesday 28 July until 9am on Thursday 30 July.

“A yellow heat-health alert will remain in place for Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands and South West regions for the same time period.”

UK Wildfires

Most parts of England and Wales are now at very high or exceptional risk of wildfires becoming severe, according to a Met Office fire severity index.

The index evaluates the probable severity of a wildfire in England and Wales should one break out.

Large parts of Yorkshire are rated as ‘very high’, with Sheffield frequently shifting between ‘moderate’ and ‘very high.’

Fire crews have fought a moorland blaze on the Peak District at Tintwistle Moor, near Glossop, for more than a month.

The Observer reports how a BBC analysis of the European Forest Fire Information System suggests the fire has now burned almost 650 hectares (about 1,600 acres) and is one of the biggest wildfires ever seen in England.

In Sheffield, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue have tackled dozens of sudden (and sometimes deliberate) blazes in July, including Greno Woods, Dyke Vale Road, Wensley Street, the A628 Woodhead Pass, and most devastatingly, a fire on Fox Hill that destroyed two terraced houses and badly damaged three more.
