Sheffield grocer's star prize entry bears fruit

A greengrocer which prides itself on its organic credentials is among the finalists competing for a national prize.

Barra Organics, on Sharrow Vale Road, is one of three businesses shortlisted for the Soil Association’s Rising Star award.

Moya Sketchley, who runs the shop with partner Mark Mercer, said she thought the association had been swayed by Barra Organics’ activities outside the shop, such as workshops and courses.

“It’s not just a shop, we’re branching out into lots of different things.”

The other two finalists in the same category are Planet Organic - a chain of shops in London - and the Devon-based Well Hung Meat Company.

The Soil Association’s BOOM – Best of Organic Marketing – Awards are now in their 30th year. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in London’s Borough Market Hall on May 11.
