We’ve compiled a list of some of the most confusing things about life in Sheffield. How many of these things have ever left you or someone you know baffled, or irked you when those from outside the city get it wrong? We’d love to hear your suggestions for things we’ve missed from our list too.
9. Where is John Bukrhill's star?
Anyone new to Sheffield might wonder who is the man they see pushing a pram while wearing a bright green wig and a giant foam hand. You'll soon learn it's John Burkhill, a true Sheffield hero who is closing in on his target of raising £1 million for Macmillan Cancer Support, having completed more than 1,000 races, inspired every step of the way by the memory of his late wife and daughter. The real question for Sheffielders is where is his star on the Sheffield Legends Walk of Fame outside the town hall, alongside the likes of Sean Bean, Joe Cocker and Jessica Ennis-Hill? 10. What is Henderson's Relish and what do you put it on?
Henderson's Relish is ubiquitous in Sheffield and no dining table is complete without a jar of the unique condiment which has been brewed in the city since 1885. Yet outside of Sheffield, it remains little known, with the inferior Worcestershire sauce more commonplace. It is starting to get wider recognition, though, popping up in some unlikely locations far from Sheffield, and unlike its rival from the Midlands it has the advantage of being vegan. As for what it goes with, the better question would be what doesn't it go with? It's great with pies, though it improves almost any savoury dish, and it's also a delicious addition to many cocktails. 11. The paternoster lift at Sheffield's Arts Tower
The University of Sheffield's paternoster lift might be a scary prospect for those who've not come across one before, though there's nothing to be worried about. It's one of only two such continuously moving open lifts in the UK, the other being in a London hospital. It rides up and down the university's 22-storey Arts Tower, which is Sheffield's second tallest building. Photo: JPI media
12. Why does the air smell so sweet in Hillsborough?
You may have noticed there's something in the air in Hillsborough, which is surely Sheffield's sweetest smelling suburb. That's probably because it's home to the confectioner Simpkins, which was been churning out its famous boiled sweets since being founded in 1921. It's also the home of Liquorice Allsorts, Jelly Babies and Trebor Mints - all made at the old Bassett's factory on Beulah Road which is today run by the giant multinational Mondelēz.
