It’s not the first time Sheffield has made national and international headlines, as this photo gallery shows. How many of these events do you remember?
9. Farewell to Sheffield landmark
Sheffield's skyline changed indelibly when two of its most recognisable landmarks, the Tinsley cooling towers beside the M1, came crashing down on August 24, 2008. The 250ft-tall towers had been built 70 years earlier to help meet the demand for electricity, which the existing towers at Blackburn Meadows Power Station could no longer do. They were affectionately dubbed the city's 'salt and pepper pots' and for many people acted as a welcome sign that they were nearly home. Up to 10,000 people gathered to watch as the towers were consigned to history in a huge cloud of dust. Photo: Sheffield Newspapers
10. The Full Monty becomes a global hit
The Full Monty was surprise global hit, as audiences around the world lapped up the funny and moving tale about a ballsy group of unemployed steelworkers baring all to make ends meet. Made for a reported $3.5 million it grossed more than $250 million at the box office and sparked a wave of tourism by fans from as far afield as Japan, keen to see the city in which it had been shot. A new Disney+ TV series is due out soon, featuring most of the original cast, filmed in Sheffield and picking up the action some 25 years later. Watching The Full Monty gets in the way for Sheffielders, who can't help but spend most of the film's duration trying to work out where in the city certain scenes were filmed. It'll undoubtedly be the same for the new Full Monty series which is being produced by Disney+ Photo: 3rd party
11. Johnny Depp's surprise appearance at Sheffield City Hall
Johnny Depp stunned audiences at Sheffield City Hall in May 2022 when he made a surprise appearance, joining Jeff Beck on stage. The Hollywood star was embroiled in a court battle with his ex-partner Amber Heard when he joined Beck, singing with him on Isolation, a cover of a John Lennon song the pair released together in 2020. Jeff Beck sadly died earlier this year, aged 78. Photo: Terence Turnbull
