It’s not the first time Sheffield has made national and international headlines, as this photo gallery shows. How many of these events do you remember?
5. 'Stop having sex with my hedge'
Another topiary-related dispute made the headlines when retired art teacher Keith Tyssen pleaded with drunken louts to stop pretending to have sex with a hedge outside his home in Broomhall, Sheffield. The hedge has been carefully pruned into the shape of a tastefully nude lady he calls Gloria since 2005. But Mr Tyssen complained in 2018 that she was getting too much unwanted attention, forcing him to make regular repairs to his creation. Photo: Robert Cumber
6. Woman arrested for blowing toy horn
Sheffield Council made unwanted headlines around the world with its tree-felling programme and the protests it sparked. A long-awaited report into the fiasco published this year found the council had been 'dishonest' and 'deluded' in its actions during the sorry saga, eroding the public's trust. Perhaps the most farcical moment came when a protester was arrested for tooting a toy horn. One woman being arrested for blowing a toy horn at tree protes. Sheffield Council misled the public and courts in what was described as a ‘dark episode’ for the city, according to the damning findings of the street tree inquiry. Photo: Contributor
7. Harry Maguire breaks transfer record
Sheffield-born Harry Maguire became the world's most expensive defender in history in 2019, when he joined Manchester United for a fee of £80 million. The 30-year-old, who hails from Mosborough, still holds that title. He has had mixed fortunes at Manchester United but remains an England stalwart. Photo: Fran Santiago/Getty Images
8. Russell crow attacks
An unruly crow caused terror in Sheffield's suburbs when it started attacking unsuspecting walkers there in 2019. Russell crow, as the violent bird was nicknamed, had people in a flap in Brincliffe Edge Wood, where walkers reported being followed and repeatedly 'dive-bombed' by the bird, and one man suffering a nasty cut to the head. One victim told how it felt like he'd been walloped on the back of the head by what felt like a 'sack of spuds', before seeing a 'black shadow' flying away. Photo: Zara Maun and Sam Howard
