And now the crews who dealt with the incident have revealed that a disposable barbecue was the cause.

A fire service spokesman said: “This took seven fire engines, seven hours to put out.

“The fire was extremely deep seated and difficult for our firefighters to tackle.

“The cause? A disposable BBQ.

“Barbecues are banned in most parts of open countryside. The risk of fire is exceptionally high right now. Just take a sandwich instead.”

It is the latest fire to break out on dry grass. Another incident was reported in Stand Hill Park at Rawmarsh yesterday.

And on Wednesday night, fire crews were sent to deal with a blaze on grass on the green space next to Wensley Street, near Wincobank, after that had caught light, with crews praised for their quick response.

And a car fire started a blaze on moors near the Woodhead Pass on July 16, after the flames from the vehicle spread to the surrounding grass.

Meanwhile, firefighters have been battling an ongoing moorland wildfire at Tintwisle Moor in the Peak District for more than a week. The Woodhead Pass has been closed while firecrews deal with the Peak District incident.

To fight the Peak District fire, Derbyshire fire crews have been supported by helicopters dropping water on the fire.

Emergency services are urging the public to support them by avoiding the area and staying off the moorland.
