Famous Sheffield tree set alight amid park barbecue concerns as temperatures soar
Concerns after famous tree in popular park catches light in ‘deliberate’ fire
Firefighters battled a blaze in the early hours in Graves Park, Sheffield, after a landmark fallen tree caught fire.
Dog walker Dek Smith, called firefighters to the scene shortly after 5am today when he spotted flames, and fears that the fire may have been caused by a barbecue.
But firefighter believe it was more likely that it was deliberately set alight.

The tree was well known and caused a wave of sorrow among park goers when it was blown down in Storm Elin in December 2023.
It was so popular that Sheffield Council commissioned a work of art next to what they called the ‘Lone Tree’, describing the sculpture as a lasting tribute to the tree’s place in the hearts of local people and the park’s heritage.
Dek said there appeared to be barbecue trays next to the burning fallen tree when it saw it. He described it as well alight.

He said: “Thankfully the fire service did a great job putting out the fire to help save the famous fallen landmark of Graves Park being fully destroyed.”
He and his wife had got up at 4.30am to take the dog for a walk before it got too hot. When they saw the flames, they called the fire service.
Dek added it took some time before they were able to get their fire engine in because of the size the the park entrance. They finally got in near the Graves Park farm.

Dek added: “It looks as though there may have been a barbecue. People need to be very careful if they plan to have barbecues in this sort of weather.”
However South Yorkshire Fire and rescue Service told the Star: “Firefighters from Lowedges station were called out to Graves Park, Cobnar Road, Sheffield at 5.19am this morning. The deliberate fire involved a tree sculpture. The crew left the scene at 6.26am.”
Firefighters had said the previous day in a social media post: “Tough conditions for firefighters again.
“The ground is incredibly dry and the risk of wildfires is high. Help your local firefighters. Keep them available for life threatening emergencies.
“No garden bonfires. The conditions are totally unsuitable for having a fire in your garden.
“Leave the BBQ at home- they aren't allowed in parks and moorland.
“Take rubbish with you. Glass and plastic magnifies sunlight and causes fires.”
“Report arson anonymously to Firestoppers on 0800 169 5558 .”
