Fargate: 'Deep excavations' coming to newly-paved street in Sheffield

Earlier this month Northern Powergrid said the old electricity supply to the Event Central building was unsafe

A digger and signs warning of ‘deep excavations’ have appeared on a newly-paved shopping street in Sheffield city centre.

Fencing for a work compound has appeared on Fargate in connection with construction of £8m cultural hub Event Central.

Earlier this month Northern Powergrid said the old electricity supply to the building was unsafe.

Now, new cabling is set to run underground via Exchange Gateway, an alley that runs behind the shops.

Sheffield City Council previously said excavations would be unintrusive, hand dug and reinstated afterwards.

A two-year revamp of Fargate completed in April 2025.

Event Central is a six-storey building opposite Marks and Spencer. It is being converted into an £8m event space, café/bar, offices and meeting rooms.

It was due to open this year but the electricity supply problems have pushed it back to 2027.
