Henrik Pedersen faces fan anger after forlorn Sheffield Wednesday defeat at Notts County

Sheffield Wednesday fans made their feelings known after their side fell to a 2-0 defeat at Notts County.

Travelling supporters of Sheffield Wednesday made their anger clear following a performance riddled with setbacks that allowed Notts County to breeze to only their second win of the League One campaign.

The Owls were coming off a buoyant 5-0 thrashing of AFC Wimbledon but again allowed errors and inconsistency creep into their output as an unchanged side played out an insipid showing. To make matters worse, Di’Shon Bernard went off injured after 10 minutes, while both Callum Slattery and Jamal Lowe will serve suspensions; the former picking up a fifth yellow of the campaign with Lowe shown a straight red card Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen said was deserved.

Nearly 40 minutes had passed between the final whistle and Pedersen appearing for his media commitments at Meadow Lane.

On the performance he said: “To compete in League One and to win a football game in League One, all the level in first half, for our basic, for the intensity in the game, for the second ball, for the duel, for those basic things, we were not on the level what we have been on Saturday and before this. And on the ball we had too many easy mistakes and then we got a transition against us, but first half was under this level for who we want to be and of course, second half, then it's a difficult beginning with a red card and then the boys worked hard in second half with 10 men, but it was too late.”

Pedersen rejected the suggestion that the side’s intensity levels didn’t improve after the break and when they were reduced to 10 men after Lowe’s dismissal. Pressed on continued inconsistency in performance levels over recent weeks, the Dane admitted that his side lacked a requisite mindset for a League One battle.

He continued: “After a good game, good performance, today we didn't reach those basic things that make a good performance in League One and this is what we have to learn, that it doesn't matter where we're playing and against who we play, then we have to find our basic level.

“Generally in this season the mentality has been tough, it has been really, really strong. Today we fought to find this dominant mindset, to find this instinct to be really, really competitive in the first half and of course this is something we have to find very, very quickly.”

That Wednesday named an unchanged side in such a quick turnaround from Saturday’s win came as a surprise to many. Given the admission on the intensity shown, Pedersen was asked whether he regretted not making changes - something he didn’t deny.

“We spoke about how much we want to change after a top performance and what we did Saturday,” he said. “I thought that it was the right thing to keep the team we had and also to get this consistency, to get the relations again and again and it was my reason why we took the same starting 11.”

Wednesday players and Pedersen himself were the recipients of an angry response from many of the travelling supporters who had made it to the final whistle at Meadow Lane. Asked whether the anger shown had registered, he said: “We are not the Sheffield Wednesday team we want to be tonight and of course we are all angry. The players are angry, I am angry, the other coaches are angry. We are all disappointed because we don't deliver on the level we want to deliver.”
