Man admits perverting justice over 2006 Sheffield murder

A man on trial for murder has been cleared after the judge in the case directed jurors to return not guilty verdicts.

But he did admit perverting the course of justice in connection with the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Sheffield almost 20 years ago.

Faiser Hussain, 44, had been on trial at Hull Crown Court for two weeks over the murder of Ibrahim Ilyas and the attempted murders of two other men.

He pleaded guilty to perverting the course of public justice on Tuesday, October 20.

Following the plea, Hussain was found not guilty of murder and two counts of attempted murder after the judge directed the jury to return those verdicts.

Hussain, of no fixed abode, was remanded into custody ahead of a sentencing hearing on Thursday, October 22.

Ibrahim, known as Ibby, was fatally shot while sitting in a car on Abbeyfield Road, Pitsmoor, on Saturday, June 3, 2006. Two other men were also injured in the shooting.

Hussain was arrested at Manchester Airport on March 7 this year and subsequently charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The case came almost 20 years after Ibrahim's death, which devastated his family.

Mohammed Ali, who was 24 at the time, was convicted of Ibrahim's murder in 2006 and jailed for life with a minimum term of 30 years.

In the days following Ibrahim's death, his mother, Khadijah Ilyas, said the family had been left devastated by the events.

A tribute to the 20-year-old described him as a much-loved young man.

It read: “His smile was bright, it made the sun shine.

“His eyes were as beautiful as an emerald.

“He told his jokes, made everyone laugh.

“He was quiet, never harmed a fly. That’s why we are all going to miss him.”

Floral tributes were also left at the scene of the shooting.
