Woman dies after Sheffield house fire as ‘clothes set on fire’ from cigarette

The woman, in her 70s, was airlifted to hospital yesterday but could not be saved and later died.

Hide AdFire investigators believe a discarded cigarette set fire to the OAP’s clothes.
The fire on New Cross Drive, Woodhouse, was reported at 12.30pm yesterday.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “A woman has sadly passed away after a house fire in Sheffield.

Hide Ad“Firefighters were called to the property, on New Cross Drive, at 12.30pm yesterday.
“Upon arrival they found the fire was out but the occupant, a lady in her 70s, had suffered significant burn injuries.
“It is believed that this fire started when smoking materials, likely a cigarette, set the casualty’s clothes on fire.

The woman was taken to hospital by an air ambulance which landed in a field next to Stradbroke Road.
