Sheffield police officer attacked and taken to hospital after approaching man driving ‘erratically’

He suffered head and knee injuries in an attack at the junction of Cricket Inn Road and Woodbourn Road, Wybourn, at around 6.30pm yesterday.

South Yorkshire Police said he was assaulted as he and a colleague attempted to approach a man reported to have been driving ‘erratically’ on Derek Dooley Way earlier.

The force said: “Police were called at 6.33pm yesterday following reports of a man behaving erratically on Derek Dooley Way in Sheffield.

“On arrival officers located the man at the junction of Cricket Inn Road and Woodbourn Road.

“As they approached and tried to speak to him, the man assaulted one of the officers.

“The officer was taken to hospital with injuries to his head and knee.”

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

An update on whether he has been charged has not yet been provided this morning.
