It was reported that a group of fellow students had been setting off fireworks on their way home from school and one of them threw one at the young girl on Smelter Wood Crescent.

She is now under the care of a team of plastic surgeons for her facial burns in the hope that she will not be permanently scarred.

South Yorkshire Police said: “Police are continuing their enquiries into the reported assault of a 12-year-old girl in Sheffield.

“It is reported that at around 3.05pm on Friday, November 6, the 12-year-old was walking home along Smelter Wood Crescent when persons unknown threw a firework into her face.
