Police issue update after Sheffield shooting, as 16-year-old boy remains in hospital

A 16-year-old boy remains in hospital today following a double shooting in which a man, 30, was also injured.

They were both reportedly hit when shots were fired towards the car in which they were sitting – a silver Volkswagen Golf – near to Thirlwell Road in Heeley yesterday, Saturday, February 29, at around 12.50am.

Police, who are still investigating the shooting, this afternoon issused an update.

The boy is still in hospital, they said, though his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The 30-year-old, who sustained minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and drink driving, has since been released on police bail.

No further arrests have been made but police are continuing their enquiries today.

Police said yesterday thaat the 16-year-old was understood to have been shot in the back and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Residents and shopkeepers in the area told yesterday evening how there had been police tape at a car park outside the Red Lion pub at the bottom of the road, with one man claiming the car park was often frequented by ‘unsavoury characters’ late at night.

Police have said extra officers will be patrolling Heeley this weekend and have encouraged people to speak to them if they have any concerns.

Anyone with information, particularly those who may have dash cam footage, is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 42 of February 29.
