There were no police at the scene when The Star visited this evening, but we were told the car park outside the Red Lion pub on the corner of London Road had been taped off earlier in the day.

One shopkeeper said CCTV had shown a Golf travelling down Thirlwell Road towards London Road, though there was no sign of shots being fired and it was not known which way the vehicle had turned.

He said: “You do get some unsavoury characters in the car park at night. You see lights really late and think ‘what are they doing there?’.”

Another shopkeeper said: “The car park seems to atract some undesirables. It’s noted for people gathering to deal drugs and so on.”

A resident on the road said: “I’ve lived here for eight years but it’s definitely gone downhill. There are lots of thefts in the area. B&M gets a lot of hassle and you always see discarded boxes on the green over there which have been stolen.

“It’s just a shame. It used to be a really good area when I moved here.”

When The Star visited the Red Lion, a bar lady told the paper no one wished to speak.

The 30-year-old suffered minor injuries and has since been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and for driving over the prescribed limit of alcohol.
