Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed that the family member of a patient was abusive and aggressive towards emergency workers and caused damage to a vehicle in Mexborough on Sunday, August 16.

While no staff were injured, the relative smashed two of the ambulance’s rear windows and the vehicle had to be taken off the road for repairs to be carried out.

Jackie Cole, Head of Operations (South Yorkshire) at Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: “We are shocked by this incident and the completely unacceptable behaviour shown towards our colleagues.

"It is appalling that our dedicated staff, who work extremely hard to deliver the best care for patients, were targeted in this way.

“In addition, the vehicle has been made unavailable to respond to life-threatening emergencies whilst repairs are carried out.

"The police were called to the incident and are currently carrying out an investigation.

“We’re committed to supporting any member of staff who is subject to aggressive behaviour and we will take appropriate action against anyone who attacks our colleagues.”

Helen Smith, who works as a dispatcher at Yorkshire Ambulance Service, tweeted about the assault.

Last night, one of my crews were subjected to a violent attack whilst treating a patient. Thankfully the crew are ok but the vehicle is not and is now off the road. Thank you for the super response from @syptweet. It's a dispatchers worse nightmare. Abuse is never acceptable
