Breck Lane Dinnington: Three injured and dog shot after suspected 'XL Bulldog' attack

A dog was shot dead by police after it was reported to have attacked three people at a South Yorkshire house.

The incident saw armed officers deployed after two men and a woman were attacked, with the animal - an XL Bulldog cross - said to have left them with cuts and puncture wounds which required hospital treatment.

The incident happened at Breck, Lane, Dinnington, at 5.24pm on Thursday, September, 12.

The street was closed while police dealt with the incident.

South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: “We responded to reports of a dangerous dog attack at a property in Breck Lane, Dinnington, Rotherham, at 5.24pm.

“Officers attempted to safely contain the dog but due to aggression shown by the dog and the heightened risk of harm, a decision was made to humanely dispatch the dog at the scene.

“Breck Lane was temporarily closed during the incident but was reopened at 7pm on the same day.”

Police say their enquiries are ongoing and witnesses to the incident or those with information are asked to contact them quoting incident number 650 of September 12, 2024.

It is the third reported of an incident involving a dog attack this month.

Last week, police revealed that a child aged four had been attacked by two dogs suspected of being XL Bullys at the the Nottingham Street Recreation Ground in Burngreave, Sheffield, on Wednesday, September 4.

The third incident was in Balby, Doncaster, on Friday, September 6.

On that occasion, a young boy was bitten by a neighbour’s dog.

It is believed that while the two year-old child was sat on his mother’s knee, a dog, believed to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, lunged towards the child, several times, causing injuries.

The boy was also taken to hospital.

Police said that the time said the South Yorkshire force receives around five reports a day about dogs dangerously out of control across South Yorkshire.

Chief Inspector Jonathan Greaves said: "We are continuing to see unprecedented demand from dangerous dogs across South Yorkshire

“We’re urging all dog owners to play their part in keeping everyone safe. You are responsible for your dog’s actions; you will be the one in court.

“Please remember dogs are animals, they can sometimes be unpredictable in how they react to certain situations.“
