Ellie Smart: Man charged with causing death of "vibrant, young" Sheffield pedestrian by dangerous driving
A man has appeared at court charged with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with an early morning Sheffield crash that led to the death of a “vibrant, young” pedestrian.
Ellie Smart, aged 29, was walking along Donetsk Way, near the Crystal Peaks area of Sheffield, when she was fatally hit by a black Vauxhall Astra vehicle at around 7.37am on Thursday, January 25, 2024.
Dean Tolan, aged 35, has now been charged in connection with the collision, and appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning (Tuesday, December 16, 2025).

Mr Tolan, of Bowman Drive, Charnock, Sheffield, faces one count of causing Ms Smart’s death by dangerous driving.
No pleas were entered during yesterday’s hearing, and the case was sent to Sheffield Crown Court, with the next hearing due to be heard in January 2026.

Mr Tolan was released on bail until then.
Ms Smart worked as a communications officer at South Yorkshire Police, and was described by the force as being a "a very popular colleague and friend."
After her death, Chief Constable Lauren Poultney added: “Ellie was a vibrant young woman who lit up any room she was in.
“She was passionate about her role, and a loyal colleague and friend.
"Her loss is felt across the whole force, and we are all holding her family in our thoughts.”
She was taken to hospital following the crash, but sadly passed away later in the day.
One bouquet which was left at the scene on Donetsk Way carried the message: "So, so sad. Fly high Ellie."
