'Airport agreement is a huge moment for region' says Doncaster Chamber

The purchase of Doncaster Sheffield Airport's freehold by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is a significant step towards its reopening, according to the Doncaster Chamber.

The Doncaster Chamber has lauded the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority's (SYMCA) decision to acquire the freehold of Doncaster Sheffield Airport from Peel, characterising it as a substantial endorsement of the airport's future viability.

Dan Fell MBE, Chief Executive of Doncaster Chamber, highlighted the collaborative spirit behind the agreement.

He said: "Congratulations to SYMCA, Peel, Doncaster Council and everyone who has worked to reach this agreement. It demonstrates what can be achieved when parties find common ground and focus on the long-term opportunity for Doncaster and South Yorkshire."

Mr. Fell emphasised that SYMCA's commitment to purchasing the freehold sends a clear message of confidence in the airport's potential. He believes this willingness to invest will reassure prospective carriers, commercial partners, and investors considering their own involvement.

"Airlines need certainty when planning routes, partners need confidence to build their operations, and investors need to know that South Yorkshire is serious about delivering this project," he added.

Beyond passenger services, the Chamber sees the airport as a catalyst for international trade, freight, tourism, and inward investment, alongside opportunities in advanced manufacturing and sustainable aviation.

The immediate priority, according to Mr. Fell, is to translate this potential into tangible commercial agreements, job creation, and economic growth.

He concluded by stating that this agreement should conclude the prolonged negotiations, allowing all efforts to now focus on mobilising for the airport's launch and ensuring its commercial success.
