Mogging; adj. - 1. playfully outshining, upstaging or outperforming someone or something.
At least according to Collins Dictionary, which made this outstanding example of Gen Z and Gen A vernacular the official Word of the Year for 2026.
Maybe if you went back in time five years, getting mogged could have simply meant the Cat Distribution System bestowing you a moggy of your own out of the blue. Or the unique joy of having your kitty completely ignore you at home.
Then again, in every sense of the word, cats have been mogging the human race for millennia - outshining us, outperforming us, showing us up at every stage. At least, if you asked them.
In celebration of this one-of-a-kind addition to the English dictionary, here are 13 moggies in need of a home at South Yorkshire rehoming centre Thornberry Animal Sanctuary.
Perhaps you’ll take home Havoc, a tiny kitten who was found wandering around looking very sorry for himself in a rain storm just a few weeks ago, and is now learning scritches from humans aren’t so bad.
Or how about Ash, a handsome six-year-old white tabby with a “friendly nature” who would make a “wonderful companion” for whoever gave him a chance.
Or there is poor little Breeze, who at 13-years-old is looking for her final retirement home where she can be loved and treated like the special girl she is.

10. Flash, a "lovely" 11-year-old boy with "a big personality"
"Meet Flash, our gorgeous 11 year old boy searching for his new home. Flash came to us from a vets, as he was brought into their care as a stray. Upon having a vet check, he was found to have FIV, which does mean he can only be an indoor cat. This also means that he can only live as a solo cat or with other FIV cats in the household, as to not spread this through fighting. Flash is a lovely boy, with a big personality (and just as big vocal chords!) He likes to make his presence known within the whole cattery. Flash has the sweetest nature, and only wants fusses 24/7 (as well as food!). Do you have space in your heart for Flash?" - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/flash/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary

11. "Beautiful" Francine, aged two - "confident, friendly, loves attention"
"Beautiful Francine came into our care after being found as a stray with her three kittens. Francine is an absolutely lovely lady who has so much love to give. She is a confident and friendly girl who loves nothing more than receiving a good fuss and plenty of attention. After spending her time caring for her kittens, she’s now ready to be the one who gets all the love and affection! Francine has been a wonderful mum, but now it’s time for her to have a little adventure of her own. She’s ready to leave her stray days behind and find the loving forever home she truly deserves. Could that home be with you?" - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/francine/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary

12. Victoria, aged two, an independent cat who does things her own way
"Victoria is a lovely independent girl who has had a rather unusual start in life. She originally lived as a stray on a unit with her previous owner, and as you might expect, she is very much used to doing things her own way. We feel she would be happiest in a working home where she can have the freedom and space she is accustomed to, while also putting her natural skills to good use as a little pest controller. Victoria’s previous owner has told us that, with time and patience, she did begin to trust them and even came inside for cuddles. Victoria isn’t looking for a traditional lap-cat lifestyle right now. She is looking for someone who understands that some cats need a little more freedom and a lot of patience." - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/victoria/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary
