Mogging; adj. - 1. playfully outshining, upstaging or outperforming someone or something.
At least according to Collins Dictionary, which made this outstanding example of Gen Z and Gen A vernacular the official Word of the Year for 2026.
Maybe if you went back in time five years, getting mogged could have simply meant the Cat Distribution System bestowing you a moggy of your own out of the blue. Or the unique joy of having your kitty completely ignore you at home.
Then again, in every sense of the word, cats have been mogging the human race for millennia - outshining us, outperforming us, showing us up at every stage. At least, if you asked them.
In celebration of this one-of-a-kind addition to the English dictionary, here are 13 moggies in need of a home at South Yorkshire rehoming centre Thornberry Animal Sanctuary.
Perhaps you’ll take home Havoc, a tiny kitten who was found wandering around looking very sorry for himself in a rain storm just a few weeks ago, and is now learning scritches from humans aren’t so bad.
Or how about Ash, a handsome six-year-old white tabby with a “friendly nature” who would make a “wonderful companion” for whoever gave him a chance.
Or there is poor little Breeze, who at 13-years-old is looking for her final retirement home where she can be loved and treated like the special girl she is.

5. Dahlia, aged two, a "little dream" who hands out "affectionate little head bumps"
"Dahlia really is a little dream. Having been a wonderful mum to her kittens, she’s now ready to find a loving home of her very own. With a truly lovely temperament, Dahlia is friendly, sweet and gentle. She absolutely loves a fuss, rewarding you with happy purrs and affectionate little head bumps. She’s a confident girl who is happy to meet new people and enjoys simply being around her humans. Although perhaps not quite as carefree as her playful kittens, Dahlia has a lovely calm and settled nature, making her a wonderful companion. She’s a girl who will happily soak up your affection and bring plenty of love into your home. Could you be the one to make all of Dahlia’s dreams come true?" - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/dahlia/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary

Lightning is finding shelter life a little overwhelming after being in a home, and takes comfort in dark, cozy spaces to help him feel extra safe We feel once in a home, Lightning’s personality and true self will begin to shine through, and he will hopefully be a much more confident boy. 7. Baby, aged six - yes, that is his name
"Meet our handsome big Baby, and yes that is his name! Baby has lived with another cat previously, however it was clear he didn’t enjoy their company so the decision was made to rehome him to live as a solo cat. Handsome Baby has only ever lived indoors, and enjoys spending his days lounging around the house & watching the world go by through the windows while he remains safe & warm indoors. He can be a little demanding & needy, always requesting some form of attention, whether this be in the form of gentle fuss or play. If you are missing a big baby from your life, maybe Baby could be the perfect addition." - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/baby/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary

8. Bella the beautiful one-year-old tortie
"Bella is a beautiful, super friendly one-year-old tortoiseshell cat who has lots of love to give and is sure to make a wonderful companion for her lucky new family. Sadly, Bella has a wound behind her front leg where her collar became stuck during her days as a stray which we are currently treating. As Bella has been used to having outdoor access, she will need a home where she can safely enjoy the outdoors. Bella is still only young and has her whole life ahead of her. She deserves a loving home where she can feel safe, cherished and part of the family." - https://www.thornberryanimalsanctuary.org/animals/bella/ | Thornberry Animal Sanctuary
