Earlier this year, The York, on Fulwood Road, was bought by All Points North Pub Co, who revealed plans for a renovation to refresh the “tired” interior.
June saw the pub close for just over two weeks before reopening with its new look on June 27.
The owners, made up of Steve Holt, founder of Kirkstall Brewery, Lisa Holt, and Ed Mason, founder of Five Points Brewing and Whitelock’s Ale House, have invested close to £100,000 into the Victorian public house.
It was hoped that the renovation would create a “cosier, warmer, and more welcoming” atmosphere.
Steve said there are still some finishing touches to be made in the upcoming days, including the beer garden, but so far the pub has had new furnishings and decorations, a fresh coat of paint, and has had a half wall knocked down to create a more open-plan layout.
Wife Lisa said she is “ecstatic” to see Steve’s collection of former Sheffield brewery Gilmour memorabilia out of their home and on the walls of the Broomhill pub.
Steve added that the team were eager to change the pub’s image so it is “more like a pub with good food, than a restaurant that serves beer”. This has led to the unveiling of a new food menu. Head chef Dave Jones, formerly of Rising Sun in Nether Green, said the menu still has “pub vibes”, but there will be seasonal tweaks made throughout the year.
The Sheffield chef added that “there will be plenty to keep people interested”.
The pub will also be changing its opening hours from 4pm to midday for lunchtime customers.
Customers can now order sandwiches, including fish fingers with tartar sauce and mushy peas, and roasted mushrooms with garlic mayo. Mains on offer include the classic pie, with chips or mash, currywurst with sausages from Piper’s in Crosspool, and samosa chaat.
While the grand opening is due to take place on July 5, The Star were invited ahead of the big day to check out some of the completed works. Check out our photos below.
